10 Super Hacks to Get More Blog Post Shares
You might think or might have heard that if you create well-written, informative, compelling content, that followers will find you, and your audience will grow like wildfire. Well...unfortunately the "if you build it, they will come" philosophy doesn't really apply anymore. The Internet is absolutely inundated with a sea of blogs. In fact, according to FirstSiteGuide statistics, as of 2021 there are about 570 million.
But some bloggers have still managed to build a massive following, sometimes earning thousands or even millions of dollars a year by monetizing their blog. So once you've tackled your venture of sharing your passions and news about your business with the world, and are creating stellar content, how do you build your audience? Here are 10 Super Hacks to Get More Blog Post Shares!
1. Add Share Buttons
Sorry folks, it had to be said. But sometimes we do focus on the high-level stuff and forget the little things once in a while. Naturally, your content won't be shared if you don't add the share buttons to your blog page and your emails. It's best to use a plug-in for a floating social share block that follows your users as they scroll your pages. Sometimes, readers don't make it all the way to the bottom of your article. So using a floating share block, rather than a static one just at the top or bottom of your page, increases your changes of getting shared. It also helps to include a call to action along with your share buttons. You need to tell people what you want them to do, or they probably won't do it.
2. Reciprocal Sharing
If you've ever used social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, you know that the more people you follow, the more followers you get. You follow them, they follow you back right? This concept also applies to blog posts. If you find writers with interests similar to yours, that write about similar topics, and whose opinions you respect, then you should share their work. Be sure to make specific and thoughtful comments on their posts when you share them, and let people know how the information helped you. And make sure when you comment that you're logged in as a user so your identity is clear and you don't look like a hacker or a robot.
One easy way to find articles on the web that are similar to yours, is to go to Google Alerts. Just type in a topic, choose how often you'd like to receive alerts, for sources choose "Blogs", select your language, region, how many you'd like to receive, and the email notifications of the blog articles that meet your criteria. You can then read the articles, and if you like it and the author, make a thoughtful comment along with an invitation to visit your blog.
3. Name Dropping
Try every once in a while to reference a relevant quote from someone else's blog. Make sure to cite their article, and include their name, maybe even with an outbound link to their content. Savvy bloggers keep track of links to their site and where they come from. If a popular blogger notices you sharing their ideas and content, over time they may check you out and share yours as well.
4. Trade with Industry Allies
Perhaps you have some connections, vendors, or even customers in your same industry that have a similar target audience but aren't direct competition. Some of your connections may have blogs or vlogs of their own. It's possible that if your content complements each other, you can agree to share each other's posts.
5. Reach Out and Ask
If you've taken the time to follow and read through some other blogs related to your topics of interest, then you've surely found at least a few favorite authors. Or maybe a handful of folks that you wouldn't mind getting a stamp of approval from, and would like them to share your content. It doesn't hurt to reach out to them and let them know how you think your writing might benefit their audience. Then ask them nicely if they would be willing to share some of it.
6. Use Visuals
We use visuals in our social media posts right? A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say. I use visuals all the time in business meetings. Sometimes that's what it takes to drive a point home. It's no different with your blog posts. Posts with more visual content more shares. Go crazy with infographics and charts. People love that. And posts that include optimized images tend to have a higher search engine rank. A couple of really great tools that you can use to build infographics are Adobe Spark, Canva, and Venngage.
7. Post on Social Media
It's absolutely essential that you post in your social media accounts a snippet of your blog articles, with an eye-catching image and a link to read the full articles. If you're not yet getting a lot of traffic to your blog page, posting a snippet in your social media (like Twitter, Instagram, FaceBook, and LinkedIn) brings you more exposure and makes it really easy for people in your network to share your post to their own pages. And don't forget, that for every post you make, on every platform, to include hashtags.
You should also find a few FaceBook groups within your industry to join. You may learn some great tips by following them. And you also then should comment on the posts others make to offer some advice of your own. This will help build your credibility. And then when you occasionally post within the group to notify them that you've written an article, you'll get more likes, shares, followers, and visits to your blog page.
If you find other business or fan pages in FaceBook within your niche that you really enjoy, consider making a post promoting them on your own page. Start by liking their page, then on your own page, post a link to their page, along with a comment about why you love it and why people should visit it. Then get in touch with that page's author to let them know you're promoting them. And at the same time, ask them to check out your page and consider doing the same for you.
Consider doing a contest or promotion with a giveaway. Share with your followers and your group members that they can like your page, share an article, or sign up for your email list to be entered to win. You could offer to give away just about anything. You could offer a free service that you can provide, a free product you make, a gift certificate, a discount, or anything else you think your followers might like.
Also, consider a paid FaceBook ad for your blog post. If you have a FaceBook Business account, after you've posted a snippet of your article, there will be a little blue "Boost Post" button that shows up beneath it in your view (that isn't visible to the public). You can set goals for your ad, select a call-to-action button to include, choose your target audience, and select your duration and budget.
8. eBlast It
Emailing your subscribers is critical for driving traffic to your website or blog page. You absolutely must have a sign-up form on your blog pages so new visitors can easily sign up to be added to your email subscriber list. Open an account with a platform like MailChimp or ActiveCampaign. These tools make it very easy to maintain your subscriber lists. Then whenever you post a new blog article, you can blast out a notification to your contacts. Also, your subscribers may then share your email by forwarding it to their friends and contacts. Be sure to add social media share buttons to your emails as well. And also include a link to your sign-up form.
And remember that writing catchy subject lines for your emails is an art and a science. So if you send out an eBlast that doesn't get many opens, consider changing your subject line. Then you can send it out again just to the people that didn't open it the first time to see if you get a better response.
9. Content Length
When writing articles for your blog, carefully consider the length of your content. A lot of folks think it's better to keep it short so you don't lost the attention of your readers. But in fact, the opposite is true. As long as your content is organized, sectioned, easy to follow, and has proper headings, many many studies have shown that articles and blog posts that have the highest dwell times and get the most shares are those that have over 3,000 words. Articles with between 2,000 - 3,000 words are second, between 1,000 - 2,000 words thirds, and under 1,000 words the least. Also to be considered, is that it has been shown that articles and blog posts with over 2,000 words tend to rank the highest in Google.
10. Friends and Family
Don't be afraid to ask your friends and family, and even your co-workers and colleagues, to sign up for your blog and share your articles with their contacts. And maybe even share your social media snippet posts on their own social media pages. If you have colleagues in an industry similar to yours, they may even be will to share their contact lists with you.
You've worked really hard developing and writing interesting and creative content. But it doesn't matter if no one can find it and no one reads it.
